Our kit covers needs that are common to every household. A few things we leave out on purpose, because they depend on your particular circumstances. Your survival guide covers each one, and every delivery includes a short checklist for that month.
Food
Allergies, dietary restrictions, and personal taste make food hard to get right for everyone. It also needs replacing more often than other items we include. Our food storage guide helps you build a plan that works for your family.
A kit for work or your car
It is important to keep some supplies any place you spend lots of time away from home. We price these separately because the number you need doesn't track the number of people in your home. We're working on one — join our mailing list and we'll tell you when it's ready. To build your own, start with:
- Water and some food
- A first aid kit, and any medications you take
- A flashlight and batteries
- A phone charger
Some supplies under your bed
Two things matter most:
- An old pair of shoes, so broken glass doesn't cut your feet
- A flashlight, so you can see
Dust masks, a whistle, water, work gloves, and eye protection are worth adding. Your survival guide walks through it.
A tent, sleeping bags, and warm clothes
Most Portland households already own camping gear, so including it would duplicate what you have and raise the price for everyone. If your home isn't safe to sleep in, your own gear will keep you far more comfortable than a car or a public shelter. Stash some warm clothes you rarely wear next to your supplies too. The mylar sleeping bag and blanket in our kit supplement real bedding rather than replace it.
If you need to buy camping gear, try Next Adventure or Foster Outdoors; both offer used gear and their employees can help you with the buying process.
Furniture fasteners, glasses, prescriptions, diapers, pet food
Not everyone needs these, but they matter a lot to the people who do. Your survival guide covers each one, and you don't have to handle them all at once. Questions about what is or isn't in the kit? Email ari@pdxquakeprep.com.
