Why Earthquakes?
The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a massive fault line that runs for 700 miles off the coast of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. Every 250 years or so, this fault produces powerful earthquakes (magnitudes 7-9+) that shake the entire Pacific Northwest. The last earthquake happened over 300 years ago. The exact timing of earthquakes is impossible to predict, but another large quake is a geological inevitability. Scientists believe there is approximately a 37% chance of a magnitude 7.1 or larger earthquake happening in the next 50 years.
Much of our infrastructure was built before the threat of an earthquake was well understood. Portland did not adopt building codes that include earthquake considerations until 1994. A severe earthquake could render our roads, pipes, electrical infrastructure, and more unusable for many weeks or months. This is why the Oregon Department of Emergency Management recommends all households prepare to be self-sufficient for two weeks, since it may take a long time for substantial disaster aid to arrive. Why I Started PDX Quake Prep
I grew up in Portland hearing that we're "overdue for The Big One." As an adult that pushed me to get my own household ready, and then to help friends and neighbors do the same.
Building a proper emergency kit is something anyone can do. Helping others taught me that it's also something very few people want to do. Researching every item, reading reviews, comparing prices, and actually buying it all can add up to a lot of time and headache. I built this business for everyone who doesn't want to make "prepping" their latest hobby.
